ARCH1201_ Project two revised submission

Revised drawings.
House 1(left) House 2(right)
From last week what could be improved is the planning of the houses, minimise the stairs and corridors. Also redo the street elevations and to have street show on the plans. Consider a space that can have multifunction or with no circulation. Moreover, the openings need to be more careful and considerate.

Major changes for House 1 would be the changes of all of the planning, from the entrance goes on to the 2nd level to the living area, dining area, kitchen and bathroom. Then follow the stairs down to 1st level where the office and bedrooms are. Think of considerate openings for house 1, there is a opening that sort of stood on the wall and into the gallery space. Also the working space could look down to the gallery space (this idea was from last week but openings were not as considerate)

Major changes for house 2 would be consider more of the facade that relates to other street buildings and to design building itself. To have the front facade relate to the gallery i created a similar frame openings and it also have the same angle as the entrance of the gallery. I limited the circulation in the living area, also having an idea of garden in a garden, central garden that relates with the gallery space. So the space goes from a clear circulation to almost no circulation.

Major changes for gallery space, I have moved the entrance of house 1 so there is more space for the small display room. I also created a dark room where the art objects can be put. The glass big display room is unchanged except the height of the ceiling. (taller than house 1) Also there's an outdoor area (garden) for the gallery, originally its house 2's garden.

Week 11 progress before presentation

Start from a concept model that is two "L" shaped model, having two combined as a one (?) building. Also the ideas of combining old and new, the ideas of having an old, normal suburban house on Victoria street but combined with a new design.
For house 1 there's a roof garden and for house 2 there is a garden behind the old house also the free garden space under street level.
Having the entrance on the side of the old house and enters the small room of display arts, and the glass like area framed as the large display room.
In this house one is the block on top and is 10 metres tall which merges with the building next to it.

Week 10 progress

The concept model experimenting the folded structure and shape, planning the design that could happening next to the walls and beneath the ceiling

make the model to present the walls and levels, consider the functions of the double house and the gallery area.

Want to have the bedroom close to back street to get the light and air but its a bit awkward to place it there, coz people look out from there to see the city view, but bedroom needs privacy so need to consider planning more.
And also trying different openings that needed for the design.

Week 9 Progress

Still playing with the light and air, and trying to have a floating level for the gallery space, with glazing and framing of the walls.
For the gallery level, having some stepped design through, and thinking the top two level could have the same design.

Week 8 group site model + progress

group site model we make the parts next to the site block

For this weeks progress I was focusing that for each room to have light and air in, to have a cut in the middle of the block.
With experiments on the angled pathways, floors and ceilings.

ARCH1201_Project 1 FINAL

 Part a)
Drawings:

Models: (1:50)

The final model I explored more of the materiality and the space between new and old, the furniture (kitchen bench) were there to present a way of living in the house. For my parts I only built shell of the suburban house to emphasize my L shaped area that I want to represent. I added levels between the two parts, this is another clever distinction between space, whether it feels interior or exterior

Part b)
Drawings:

Abstract models

formal devices:

The two things that strikes me of gehry house are the materiality and the geometries, different shape and angles. Frank Gehry not only in forms but the house do combined with a desire for ideal life in it. I want to explore how gehry make those a completion of his house. In my studies I cut out all the openings of gehry house and make a tiny room. Wall separate rooms. I created a space that contain all the openings. And similar or contrast shape corresponds with each other.

Materiality(from part a studies):

Gehry says his house is "a dump little thing with charm" he breaks some geometric forms and carving out some wall pieces. So I explored his idea with two contrasting models, one presenting the old part and the new part. with foam board and balsa.

Private and public:

In this study I want to express the idea of public and private in a simple way. When I was doing part a model and look between the L shape, the two space that gehry had created. I found out that he didn't create two different spaces, he was blending the two spaces. He teared out the walls and show the structure of the wall which makes the private space less private. Then for the public spaces he added glazing so the public space now can be more private too. So when people (his family) in the space can explore more.
